Like Jewels on a Necklace

One of my favorite shop stops at the mall is Brighton, a fashion accessory store. Jewelry items from that store often find their way to the top of my wish list for gift-giving celebrations.  Although I love to wear jewelry and sparkly flip-flops, I’ve been reading through the Book of Proverbs and I am reminded of how God wants to adorn His children.

The Instruction and Teaching of our Parents

My child, listen when your father corrects you.
 Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction. What you learn from them will crown you with grace
 and be a chain of honor around your neck. Proverbs 1:8-9

My son, obey your father’s commands, and don’t neglect your mother’s instruction. Keep their words always in your heart. 
 Tie them around your neck. When you walk, their counsel will lead you.
 When you sleep, they will protect you.
 When you wake up, they will advise you.  For their command is a lamp
 and their instruction a light; 
their corrective discipline is the way to life. Proverbs 6:20-23

Love and Faithfulness

Never let loyalty and kindness leave you!
 Tie them around your neck as a reminder.
 Write them deep within your heart.  Then you will find favor with both God and people,
 and you will earn a good reputation. Proverbs 3:3-4

Wisdom, Understanding, Sound Judgment, and Discretion

Proverbs 3:21-26
My child, don’t lose sight of common sense and discernment. 
 Hang on to them, for they will refresh your soul.
They are like jewels on a necklace. They keep you safe on your way, and your feet will not stumble.
You can go to bed without fear;
 you will lie down and sleep soundly.
You need not be afraid of sudden disaster or the destruction that comes upon the wicked, for the Lord is your security. He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.

Proverbs 4:7-9
Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.
If you prize wisdom, she will make you great. Embrace her, and she will honor you.
She will place a lovely wreath on your head; she will present you with a beautiful crown.

 The Results of Obtaining Wisdom and Understanding

Proverbs 4:13-18  
Blessed are those who find wisdom,
 those who gain understanding,
for she is more profitable than silver
 and yields better returns than gold.
She is more precious than rubies;
 nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand;
 in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant ways,
 and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her;
 those who hold her fast will be blessed.
