A Girl’s BFF

Having a best friend is one of life’s treasured gifts.   If we are blessed, we may have several BFF’s to walk us through life.  As children, we tend to gravitate toward “one friend,” but as we mature, we realize that there isn’t “just one person” who can meet every need we have. As wives, not even our husbands can do that. Hopefully, you have been blessed with a variety of friendships. There are times, however, when it feels like there are none.

But there is One who is uniquely qualified to be a BFF in every way.

When we have something exciting to share, or something deeply troubling, we need a friend who we can call and talk to. When we are lonely, we need someone to be with us. Sometimes, unfortunately, the one we want is not available.  But God is. He is omnipresent—or present everywhere at the same time.

“I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.” (Psalm 139:7-12)

When we are struggling with something and we need advice, we call up our BFF and explain the situation.  When she dispenses her thoughtful counsel, sometimes it’s clear that she didn’t “get it.” So we try explaining it again—and still, our friend doesn’t understand what we’re going through, and so she is unable to give us the help we need. But God can. He is omniscient—knowing and understand everything. When the Bible says that God knows our hearts, it means that He understands our hearts even better than we do.  And He gives us direction through His Word (Psalm 119:105).  [Check out Light For Life.]

O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me … You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. (Psalm 139:1, 4)

Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything. (1 John 3:20)

 Then they all prayed, “O Lord, you know every heart.” (Acts 1:24)

When we have a problem that is beyond our control, we need help.  Sometimes things are beyond human help.  But they are not beyond God’s help! He is omnipotent—He has infinite power. When life seems to be spinning out of control, He gives us His power to walk through it, and sometimes He actually stops the spinning.

I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you. (Job 42:2)

Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.” (Matthew 19:26)

We need friends. And although it’s nice to have a flesh and blood person, sometimes that isn’t enough. But God is! He is always available. He understands exactly what we’re going through.  And when something needs fixing, He has the power to do something about it.
